Because of her father's job as a diplomat, the family relocated around the globe and lived in various countries like Germany, Japan and Greece. After settling in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the fall of 1980, she began attending the University of Texas at Austin. She received a bachelor's degree in theatre in that same year. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988, in order to complete her MFA.
