
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13 years old. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. The director advised her to pursue UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. There she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in addition to the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never had a conversation with Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her performance as Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of sitcom Three's Company, a job she got after being cast in the second pilot episode of the show. Janet was also featured in an episode of the show The Ropers in the year 1979. DeWitt was the final actor to be featured in the show's 1984 finale. She also appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then she was off acting for a long time. In June of 1991, she returned to acting by playing the role of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year she was in the TV comedy Spring Fling! A character based on her, voiced by another actress, was in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She was in the episode of Cybill. Her work in the 2000s includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
